Default Take over the world?

DO you think it's possible that computers will take over the world like in Terminator? Explain your reasoning.

Not the current state of computing, no. Your CD player is not about to "evolve consciousness" and turn against you. I'll start worrying about it only when 1) scientists figure out how human consciousness works and 2) figure out how to make a synthetic version. That's when I'll break out my copy of How to Survive a Robot Uprising.

Sure Not with any current technology. However once computers are able to reliably pass the turing test watch out....

It almost happened in this past year

Passing the Turing test could bring such a thing a step closer, yes, but the system would not only have to be capable of independent thought but also independent action.

There are so many movies in which robots learn to think on their own and realize that human kind is corrupt and can't take care of themselves. Maybe it'll happen decades from now but I don't think the technology is there. Even if a computer could think like that now, it would need access to every single network out there to be able to take over the world. I don't think that even exists right now.

I think we are a long way from that. If we were close, I'm sure some human would have tried to use computers to do this for there own selfish interests...

Impossible. Computers can't think and they will never be able to think. They don't have a conscience. They do what they are told to do.

Don't you guys think it's possible that the government already has such a computer?

What if they are programed to have a virtual conscience?

Government programmers are contolled by that human computer called government. They only get what they want to do by exception. Private companies are more likely to have something surprising.

Remember also, in "peace-time" the government has to buy from the lowest bidder.

A conscience is only second-guessing yourself and having knowledge that you have to deal with other entities around you. Those facets would be unavoidable in programming a thinking AI.
