Can alcoholics ever cure alcoholism itself?
From what I understand, the only thing alcoholics can do is to stop drinking, right ...? Can they ever be able to cure alcoholism itself, that is, can they ever become those who can drink with moderation? Is it absolutely impossible?

Re: Can alcoholics ever cure alcoholism itself?
I have run bars and restaurants for over 15 years, and the short answer is no. You can not drink in moderation after becoming a full alcoholic. now I am not a doctor, but have had multiple friends and acquaintances who are alcoholics and that is what I have heard and been told. Simply put - once you quit - you have to completely quit or you abuse again eventually. that is the point of addiction.

Yeah you don't quit from being an alcoholic and can drink in moderation later or the habit returns. Too much temptation.

What's your take on the following?
Quote:
Rationing and moderation programs such as Moderation Management and The HAMS Harm Reduction Network do not mandate complete abstinence. While most alcoholics are unable to limit their drinking in this way, some return to moderate drinking. A 2002 U.S. study by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) showed that 17.7% of individuals diagnosed as alcohol dependent more than one year prior returned to low-risk drinking. However, this group showed fewer initial symptoms of dependency. A follow-up study, using the same NESARC subjects that were judged to be in remission in 2001-2002, examined the rates of return to problem drinking in 2004-2005. The major conclusion made by the authors of this NIAAA study was "Abstinence represents the most stable form of remission for most recovering alcoholics".

Who reports that? The alcoholics themselves? If you were an alcoholic at one time and were asked do you drink now and are you able to keep it moderate would you say "No, I'm an alcoholic again?" Denial is huge in alcoholics.

Yup, it is possible. It is all a matter of mental attitude, and releasing the condition. I don't think most alcoholics tend to touch another drop of alcohol again though, after they stop. It's like smoking. Why stop, to only start again through moderation? No point, unless of course you really enjoy the taste and just have a drink for the enjoyment, rather than for the escape.
