hmm... I just read on Hawking's website that he wrote the book on his theory for a Theory of Everything several years ago. And at that time he believed there was a fifty-fifty chance it could be achieved however Hawking does not endorse the publication of the book because he is now more pessimistic on if such a theory can be achieved. So now this has confused me to now I'm not sure what he is exactly working on right now
Here is a quote from wikipedia of various things he is working on but what his ultimate goal is whether its M-theory or something else I'm not sure. Next time I see a show or here something concrete I'll post it. Or you can just email Stephen Hawking himself. But he says he gets a lot of email and do to his disability it is difficult to email back so just keep in mind if your email gets answered it could very well take a long time.

Hawking has also released another book entitled 'A briefer history of time' heres the link
http://www.amazon.com/Briefer-Histor...4693006&sr=8-2
its like his other book 'A brief history of time' except it is simplified and has been updated to account for
the latest scientific observations and findings.
