One theory holds that the dimension of time is tied to the expansion of the universe, and that when the expansions is slowed time itself will slow down as well. When the universe contracts time will actually begin to reverse.
How this would effect life in our position in a way we can comprehend I do not know. But the timeframes involved are probably well beyond our numerical understanding.
