Default Get ready for your own internet domain extension!

Quote:
Internet users should soon be able to use new domain names such as .love, .paris or .bank if one of the world wide web's biggest shakeups is approved this week as expected by the web regulator ICANN.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which opened its annual general meeting Monday in Paris, was due to vote on the new names this week.

"Apart from the .com, .net or .org, the 1.3 billion web users will be able from early 2009 to acquire generic addresses by lodging common words such as .love, .hate or .city or proper names," ICANN president Paul Twomey told French newspaper Les Echos.

The meeting has gathered more than 1,300 delegates from 130 countries.

ICANN, a non-profit organization based in southern California, oversees the assignment of domain names and internet protocol addresses that help computers communicate.

very interesting to read. I am still amazed how ".com" is still far and away the most powerful, popular, and desired extension. I wonder if anything will ever come close to its popularity and general acceptance.

Mmh, this is very interesting.

But I would have thought that having so many domain extensions would just "pollute" the internet. I mean, I suppose it's good that they can describe the services they offer, but what happens when every single possible thing has its own extension? Wouldn't that just defeat the purpose of domain extensions?

It's been nearly a year and this hasn't come to pass. I really don't think the average Internet knows or cares about the distinctions between the extensions; to them the norm is always ".com".

Every time they try this it does nothing more than become a haven for spammers. Legitamate sites will always prefer a .com over anything else. Adding new extensions just creates more possibilities of spammers taking your domain name with a new extension and try to profit off of search engine querries for the original site.

What they should do is increase the cost of domain registration and renewal. As it stands now most popuar domains are just parked and never released. Parking services that sell ads often negate the yearly renewal costs. Of they increased the cost of renewal to about 30 dollars you would see a lot of these domain parkers freeing up their domains if they don't sell for their rediculous offering price.
